What We Do:
Founded in 2006 by former Marion County (Indiana) prosector, Scott C. Newman, after his early diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease at age 40 Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) was formed. It is the first-of-its-kind nonprofit gym created to offer an effective form of physical exercise to people who are living with Parkinson’s. RSB’s non-contact, boxing style fitness program was specifically designed for those with Parkinson’s disease. Why Boxing? Boxing is an intense training that works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as one progresses through the workout. Resent studies suggest specific intense exercise programs dramatically improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s by enhancing their ability to live independent lives.
These types of programs may be “neural-protective” actually working to delay the progression of symptoms. RSB classes have been proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s can actually lesson their symptoms and lead a healthier, happier life.
What We Offer:
- Assessment & Classes: ~ A scheduled assessment where you will undergo several fitness/flexibility and balance tests to determine the appropriate class level. ~ Level 1-4 classes, which accommodate varying degrees of Parkinson’s and fitness. ~ Regardless of the assigned level, the RSB method provides encouragement and support through a “tough love” approach fostering maximum effort, speed, strength, balance and flexibility.
- Support: Boxers and caregivers gather for support, listen to guest speakers, receive tips on nutrition, learn new PD research and development, and much more.
- Camaraderie: Friendship and emotional support for boxers and their cornermen.
What’s a class like?
Training classes, taught by Certified Personal Trainers, and Fitness Instructors, include an exercise program that attacks Parkinson’s at it’s vulnerable neurological points. While focusing on overall fitness, strength training, reaction time and balance, workouts include: ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics and circuit weight training. No boxing experience is necessary and people of all ages are invited to participate. Boxers both male and female, range in age from mid 30’s to early 90’s.
